Meeting Minutes

March  April  May  June  July  August  September  October  November  December

December

Meeting was called to order by Paula Mooney at 1:00 pm.

Secretary’s Report:  Attendees agreed to waive reading of the prior meeting minutes.

Treasurer’s Report:   Read by Janice Tingle

Program Committee

  • Reminder:  In January our club will again offer members to order Guild shirts
  • Suggestions were solicited as to how to use our Chapter’s $40 education scholarship.  After entertaining suggestions given, it was decided that we would offer, $20 scholarships to two members who sign up for David Taylor’s class.  Jo Loder and Monique Foley signed up for his class and received the scholarships to apply toward the $25 fee.
  • Dale Angione is available to teach a “stack-n-whack” class.  She will do the class in two sessions.  The first will be to advise students on the type of material and how much to purchase, as well as any additional preparation required for the second class.  The second class will be instruction on the stack-n-whack technique.  A show of hands of those who would be interested in the class indicated that at least 10 would be interested.  Paula advised that the class has to be written up in the Villages Recreation News prior to being held.

·        Paula announced that Joan Shay was scheduled to hold a class on Petal Play on a Wednesday in April for the Quilting Sisters Guild in Leesburg.  Paula suggested that there would be enough space in the Quilting Sisters’ class for anyone from Allamanda who is interested in Joan’s class therefore making it unnecessary to sign a contract with her for the QGOTV.  For those unfamiliar, here is a link to Joan’s website:

http://petalplay.com/eshop/

·        Discussion ensued regarding the lack of interest by Guild members in attending classes and the suggestion that we discontinue the practice of contracting with national quilt teachers.  Some thoughts regarding the lack of interest were that there are so many activities in the Villages, that people aren’t able to devote as much time to any one activity; poor marketing and communication regarding the classes was also given as a possible cause; the use of the web was also suggested and Marilyn Paluszak offered to assist Micki in marketing and attend Guild meetings with her.

·        It was remarked that Micki has done much more to market and communicate about classes than has been done in the past year.  It was suggested that under Micki’s leadership, the Program Committee will be much more effective and successful.

In Jan Bartus’s absence, Paula passed out Showcase Volunteer sheets to those volunteers present.

Marlene Jensch provided an update regarding the procedure for individuals’ wanting to sell items in the Showcase of Quilts boutique.  For more detailed information, please see the attached documents.

Several ladies displayed their handiwork at Show and Tell.  Marilyn Paluszak will upload the pictures on the Allamanda website.  http://www.myvillageclub.com/allamanda.html

Paula reminded members that only quilting supplies and the library that Marlene Jensch is developing are to be stored in our storage room.  Also a reminder that irons must be unplugged by 2:30 p.m. so they may cool down before they are stored away after meetings.

The meeting was adjourned.

November 9, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:03 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice provided the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on October 12th was $1,586.91. Receipts during the month totaled $640.50, and there were no expenses for the month. The ending balance on November 9th is $2,227.41. The balance includes Retreat funds as well as 2011 dues money that needs to be paid to the Guild.

Membership Committee – We’ve had several new members join over the last few weeks. Their names and contact information have been added to the roster, which is updated and distributed monthly with the minutes from the business meeting.

Program Committee – Sharon Musch provided an overview of upcoming Guild classes (see list below). The Guild isn’t officially accepting registrations for the 2011 classes at the moment, but if anyone is interested in any of the classes, they need to contact Sharon at sharonmusch@comcast.net so that she is prepared to submit names when registration opens.

December 7 Dale Angione—Christmas Tree Snippets (Class is full)

January No class is scheduled at this time

February 8, 15, 22 Doreen Hunter—Mystery Quilt (Note date change)

March 1 Jackie Whitehead—Hand Applique (tentative title)

March 8 and 15 Molly Waddell Clown Pattern (national teacher—she will teach classes on 2 days, but will not be here for a presentation at the Guild meeting)

April 5 David Taylor—Pictorial Applique (national teacher)

The cost for national teachers is $25.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011)

Jan Bartus provided sign-up sheets for volunteers at the Showcase. Our chapter’s responsibility at Showcase 2011 is to partner with the Friendship Star chapter to check-in and check-out quilts. Volunteers are needed all day for the judging days of January 13-14 at Laurel Manor. Volunteers are also needed to check-in quilts for Showcase 2011 at Savannah Center on January 27 from 7-10 a.m. and check-out the quilts at the end of Showcase 2011 on January 29 from 4-6 p.m. Once a quilt has been checked-in by a Friendship Star member, we are responsible for taking the quilt to the judging area and placing it on the correct table. We then need to remove it from the bag and pin the bag to the back of the quilt, covering all identifying information. We also need to ensure that all quilts are organized numerically within category. When the judges are ready for the quilts, we will take them to the judges. When they are finished being judged, we will return them to the correct table, put them back in the bag, and give them to Friendship Star members, who will distribute the quilts back to the original owners. There are still a few time slots available for volunteers. Please consider helping our chapter by giving a few hours of your time to this very worthwhile event.

Please watch your weekly email updates and business meeting minutes for more information on this subject.

OLD BUSINESS

1.      Quilt Retreat – February 15-17, 2011 – Registration forms are available at the welcome table at each meeting. Please see Jo Loder if you have questions or are interested in signing up! Final payment of the full amount is due by December 1st.

2.      We will hold a second workshop [for a fundraiser project at the November 16th Meeting].

3.      The Allamanda Quilters Holiday Luncheon is scheduled for November 30th. It is being catered by Red Sauce, and the cost is $15. Please see Dee Dean for additional information or to pay for your reservation. There will be no quilt meeting that day.

4.      2011 dues of $20 are due to Janice Tingle by December 1st. Please make your check payable to Allamanda Quilters. After paying your dues, you will receive your 2011 Guild membership card, as well as 6 tickets for the donation quilt drawing to be held at the Showcase. Your 2011 Guild membership card is required for free entrance to the Showcase in January.

5.      Micki MacCumbee provided free-motion quilting instruction and tips to the members who have been making the block-of-the-month project she’s been running.

6.      If any member has a technique or workshop idea that they would like to share at a future meeting, please contact Sharon Musch at one of our meetings or send her an email at sharonmusch@comcast.net. We have had many interesting programs in the past, such as the chenille potholders project and the recent label workshop. We’re open to anything, so please step up and share your knowledge with the rest of the group!

7.      The Guild’s Christmas Party will be held during the December 7th meeting (7 p.m. at Laurel Manor). You need to sign the list on the welcome table if you are interested in attending the party, and you would need to bring an appetizer or dessert that serves 8 people. The cut-off date to sign-up for the party is November 30th. Sharon Musch will let Carolyn Heald know how many from Allamanda Quilters plan to attend after that date.

8.      Members voted on officers for the Vice President and Secretary positions for the 2011-2012 terms. Sharon Musch will be the Vice President, and Cathy Barlow will be the Secretary.

NEW BUSINESS

1.      The Guild provides a $250 grant to individual chapters, but we need to submit our paperwork and explain what we would do with the grant money. Sharon Hannahs volunteered to gather ideas and complete the paperwork for our chapter.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1.      BJ Herter is selling tickets for the hand-quilted Baltimore Album quilt being raffled by her guild in Pennsylvania. A picture of the quilt is on the bulletin board at the welcome table. Please see her at a future meeting if you’re interested in tickets.

2.      Jo Loder showed a quilt she made and hand-quilted that is being raffled off by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The drawing is scheduled for December 4th, and all the money from the raffle will go toward scholarships for deserving young women. Tickets are $3 each or two for $5. Please see Jo at future meetings to purchase tickets.

3.      Janice announced that she has 2011 membership cards and donation quilt tickets for anyone who has paid their 2011 dues. Please see her to pick up your envelope.

4.      Cathy Barlow mentioned that a local travel agent is planning a bus trip to Paducah to visit the museum, as well as Hancock Fabric. There are also other activities planned in the Paducah area. A flyer with additional information about the trip is posted on the bulletin board at the welcome table. Please take one if you are interested.

5.      Carol Fox mentioned that it might be nice to have a bin where we could bring in scraps of fabric that are usable for something like appliqué but that we no longer want or need. Any member would be welcome to rummage through the bin and take what they need. She is going to coordinate this new venture.

6.      Marlene Jensch has several quilting related books that she is willing to donate to a lending library program for our chapter. She is going to organize this effort.

Several beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time. Check out the pictures when they’re up on our website! We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members! We also had a cameraman from The Villages VMail visit today, so look for our chapter in the next email newsletter from The Villages!

Carol Fox moved that we adjourn the meeting. Dee Dean seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 1:50 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Barlow

October

The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:00 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle wasn’t able to attend the meeting, but she provided a copy of the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on September 14th was $1,519.41. Receipts during the month totaled $77.50, and expenses for the month totaled $10.00. The ending balance on October 12th is $1,586.91.

Membership Committee – We had a member notify us that she was unable to continue participating in our club. Her name has been removed from the roster and email distribution list.

Program Committee – Sharon reminded members of the email she sent recently that lists the class offerings through the Guild. Class descriptions and supply lists for classes are posted on our bulletin board on the welcome table. The Guild expects the Nancy Chong’s Celtic appliqué class to fill up quickly, so they have set aside two spots for each chapter. If anyone is interested in attending this class, they should contact Sharon Musch as soon as possible. Sharon will put all names in a hat and draw the names of the people who will be able to attend.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011)

Janice Tingle will be away for a couple of weeks, but when she returns she will have the donation quilt tickets that have not yet been distributed. The cost of the tickets was included in your annual dues, so you have already paid for them. Please see Janice at a future meeting if you haven’t picked them up from her.

A second “block carrier” workshop will be planned, and information will be distributed at a later time. Many block carriers have already been completed and submitted. If you still have the mailing tube at home, you are encouraged to complete this project and bring in the carrier to Paula Mooney.

A total of 23 quilts have been entered in the Showcase from Allamanda Quilters. Four of the entries are Challenge Quilts. The $5 deposit that challenge quilt participants paid to participate will be returned to them at the January 4, 2011 Guild meeting. All Challenge Quilts will be kept and returned to members at the end of Showcase 2011 on January 29, 2011.

Silent Auction – Each chapter is required to donate 1 item for every 10 members. In our case, that means we need to submit 8 items for the auction. B.J. Herter has been collecting these items, and we now have all 8! Thanks ladies! Any other items you come

up with could be included in the Boutique, where our chapter could earn funds for the treasury.

Our chapter’s responsibility at Showcase 2011 is to partner with the Friendship Star chapter to check-in and check-out quilts. Volunteers are needed all day for the judging days of January 13-14 at Lauren Manor. Volunteers are also needed to check-in quilts for Showcase 2011 at Savannah Center on January 27 from 7-10 a.m. and check-out the quilts at the end of Showcase 2011 on January 29 from 4-6 p.m. Jan Bartus will have more information regarding exact responsibilities and how things work at a future meeting. She will also have a volunteer sign-up sheet at next week’s meeting (October 19). The more members we have who are willing to volunteer, the less the burden will be on us all! The Showcase is only possible through all the volunteer efforts of Guild members, and we actually are fortunate that our responsibilities are only for a few days in January. Many other chapters have been working for almost 2 years on their responsibilities!

The Guild is also looking for an additional 16-20 people to volunteer to serve in a group of 4-5 people to hang and take down quilts. Each group would need a couple of 6 foot ladders for this job. Please consider volunteering for our chapter’s responsibilities (see paragraph above) before volunteering for this duty.

Antique quilts – Details to come later.

Admission to Showcase 2011 is free to Guild members who have paid their 2011 dues by November 30, 2010. The membership card you receive after paying your dues is what you will need to show in order to be admitted to the quilt show in January. (Please refer to additional information related to our chapter’s dues under New Business.) With the payment of your 2011 dues you will also receive another 6 tickets for the donation quilt!

Please watch your weekly email updates and business meeting minutes for more information on this subject.

Old Business:

1.      Quilt Retreat – February 15-17, 2011 – Registration forms are available at the welcome table at each meeting. Please see Jo Loder if you have questions or are interested in signing up!

2.      November 2nd Shop “Stop” – Carol Fox has been coordinating this event. We currently have 12 ladies who have expressed interest in joining the group. The plan is to spend the day at The Quilt Shop of Deland, breaking mid-day for lunch as a group. Deland is a quaint little town with many interesting shops, so even if you finish your quilt related shopping (but, really, is that EVER done!), there’s plenty to do. Please contact Carol directly if you are interested in participating. Her email is pfox2162@comcast.net. The cost is $5 per person. A driver does not have to pay to participate, and they will receive an additional $5 to cover the cost of gas.

1.      Wanda Pierce and Carol Fox shared techniques related to making chenille potholders at recent meeting. These would make great boutique items to earn money for the chapter! Jo Loder is scheduled to hold a label workshop at the October 26th meeting. Paula will be scheduling our second set of workshops to make additional block carriers as well! What a busy group!

New Business:

1.      Guild Officer Nominations – Micki MacCumbee accepted the nomination for the Secretary position for the Guild. Way to go, Micki!

2.      Allamanda Quilters Officer Nominations for 2011-2012 – The nominating committee submitted Sharon Musch as the VP nominee and Cathy Barlow as the Secretary nominee. Paula asked if there were any nominations from the floor, and there were none. Our election will be held at the November 9th business meeting.

3.      Barb Dunn initiated a discussion regarding the dues for 2011 for Allamanda Quilters. Our dues for 2010 were $15, and it was suggested that we increase the dues to $20 for 2011. By doing this, we would be able to retain $10 of the dues in our chapter’s treasury after sending $10 to the Guild ($5 for Guild membership and $5 for donation quilt tickets). After a brief discussion, Barb moved that we increase Allamanda Quilters dues to $20 for 2011. Carolyn Page seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously carried. (A quorum was required for this vote, and we had 22 members at the meeting.) Dues should be paid to Janice Tingle by check (made payable to Allamanda Quilters) by November 30. This date is important! You will need your new 2011 membership card in order to be admitted to Showcase 2011 in January!

4.      Paula will be working on arranging a Stack-and-Whack class with Dale Angione for early in 2011. This will most likely take at least 2 meetings. Dale would meet with us to discuss how to pick out an appropriate fabric for the class and how to determine the measurement of the pattern in the first meeting. In the second meeting, we would learn how to cut, stack, and whack the fabric to make a quilt! The cost for this class is yet to be determined, but look for information in future emails!

5.      Quilting Sisters LaTiDa Luncheon – February 12, 2011 –The luncheon will be held at La Hacienda, and in addition to the luncheon, there is a fashion show that includes items from Coldwater Creek as well as fashions sewn by members of the guild. There will also be a boutique, Chinese auction (baskets), and a silent auction. Ticket price is $25.00, and this event usually sells out early. Tickets for this wonderful event go on sale December 3rd. Tables are already being formed by people who have attended in the past. If you are interested in attending and sitting with a group from Allamanda Quilters, please contact Cathy Barlow (cathybarlow56@yahoo.com) as soon as possible. Don’t hesitate… it would be great to have a table of Allamanda ladies there!

Announcements:

1.      Barb Dunn and Carolyn Page shared their recent experience with the Orlando area shop hop. They visited 9 shops in 2 days and especially liked the Sewing Studio in Maitland and the Bernina shop in Lake Mary.

Several beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time. Check out the pictures when they’re up on our website! We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members!

The meeting was adjourned at 2:07 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Barlow

Date: September, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the Vice President, Sharon Musch, at 1:00 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle read the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on August 10th was $1,606.58. Receipts during the month totaled $34.00, and expenses for the month totaled $121.17. The ending balance on September 14th is $1,519.41.

Membership Committee – We had a new member join today, which brings our total membership to 80.

Program Committee – Nothing new to report. Sharon reminded members about the October 5 Fantastic Fans class, as well as the November 16 Hawaiian appliqué class by Nancy Chong. If anyone is interested in attending either of these classes, they should contact Sharon Musch. The members were also reminded about the two Guild meetings scheduled for November – the regular Guild meeting on November 2 where Material Girl will provide the program, and the November 16 presentation and trunk show by Nancy Chong at La Hacienda.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011) While many members have already picked up their Donation quilt tickets from Janice Tingle, she is continuing to hold the tickets that are still remaining. She will bring the tickets to all future meetings, and members are encouraged to pick theirs up as soon as they are able. The cost of the tickets was included in your annual dues, so you have already paid for them.

The deadline to submit entry forms for showing a quilt at the Showcase was extended until October 5th. A picture of your quilt must accompany the entry form. If anyone needs assistance with getting a picture of their quilt, please contact Marilyn Paluszak. She is willing to take a picture for you if you can bring your quilt to one of our meetings. It is very important to select the appropriate category for your quilt. It will not be judged if you don’t select the right category. If you have any questions about selecting a category, please see Paula. You also must follow the directions exactly as stated on the form when it comes time to submit your quilt. You may want to copy the registration form before you submit it so that you have a copy of the directions available when it comes time to submit your quilt. Cathy Barlow will be collecting entry forms for our chapter through September 28th. After that date, please submit your form to Sharon Musch, who will be turning in all our forms at the October 5th Guild meeting.

The Showcase is accepting antique quilts for the show, but there were questions about whether or not the same form being used for other quilts should be used for the antique quilts and if they were subject to the same deadline of October 5th. The Showcase Committee did not meet over the summer, but they are scheduled to meet October 1st. In the meantime, Janice Bartus will send a couple of emails to see if we can get our questions answered. Please watch your weekly email updates for information on this subject.

BJ has a beautiful block in it, and the quilt looks absolutely amazing. She has raffle tickets available for $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. She’ll have the tickets with her at future meetings, so please see her if you are interested.

Date: August 10, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:18 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle read the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on July 13th was $1,510.08. Receipts during the month totaled $96.50, and there were no expenses during the month. The ending balance on August 10th is $1,573.58.

Membership Committee – We currently have 80 members.

Program Committee – Nothing new to report. The Guild’s Program Committee is not meeting over the summer. The next meeting will be in September.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011) Please continue thinking of unique items that can be made and sold at the boutique to earn money for our chapter. There are guidelines that must be followed for the items we create for the boutique. Those guidelines are attached. Please review the guidelines to ensure your ideas are acceptable. For example, Paula’s husband was planning to make quilt ladders (used for displaying quilts) for the boutique, but the guidelines indicate that quilting supplies (such as rulers, cutting boards, racks, etc.) can only be in the boutique if they are used items.

Paula shared a “block carrier” project idea with the group. The group really liked the block carrier, and we agreed that we’d like to set aside a work day or two at future meetings to make these items. We could make one for ourselves and make one for the boutique so that the chapter can earn some money. It would only require 1 yard of fabric, 1 yard of flannel, a mailer tube, some scraps or fat quarters and fusible web for the appliqué. Paula will provide appliqué patterns, and the chapter will purchase the mailer tubes. You would need to provide the material and other fusible web. We’ll schedule a workshop some time during September or October. Watch your email for updates!

If you plan to show a quilt at the Showcase, please remember that your registration form must be completed and submitted by November 1st. Your quilt doesn’t need to be finished by that date, but you would need to submit the dimensions of your finished quilt along with a picture. Please make sure you select the appropriate category for your quilt.

Old Business:

1.      Quilt Retreat – February 15-17, 2011 – Registration forms are available at the welcome table at each meeting. Please see Jo Loder if you have questions or are interested in signing up!

2.      We currently have 15 ladies who are planning to join the Shop Hop that is scheduled for August 24th. If you haven’t notified Cathy Barlow that you’re interested, and you would like to attend, please let her know ASAP! It promises to be a fun day for all!

3.      Jump Start Quilt – This class has proven to be very popular, and everyone seems to be working hard on their blocks each month. It’s so much fun to see the different color combinations of the same patterns.

New Business:

There was no new business to report.

Announcements:

2.      BJ Herter shared pictures of the donation quilt that her Milford Valley Quilt Guild is raffling off in June 2011. It is a queen size Baltimore Album quilt that is all done by hand. BJ has a beautiful block in it, and the quilt looks absolutely amazing. She has raffle tickets available for $1 each or 6 tickets for $5. She’ll have the tickets with her at future meetings, so please see her if you are interested.

3.      The Shop Hop Passport that was donated by Wanda Pierce was raffled off at the June 22nd meeting. Linnea Knauer won the passport. The raffle generated $17 for our treasury.

4.      Cathy Barlow indicated that one of the members who had an email address that came back as “undeliverable,” returned a phone call to correct her email address. The other 2 members have not responded to messages, so their email addresses have been removed on the current version of the roster.

5.      Members were reminded that August 24th is a [primary] voting day, and the room we use for our meetings will be in use as a precinct. There will be no meeting that day. We will be going on a shop hop.  Details regarding the shop hop will be sent out in a future email.

New Business:

There was no new business to report.

Several beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members!

Jo Loder moved to adjourn the meeting, and the motion was seconded by B.J. Herter. The meeting was adjourned at 1:28 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Barlow

Date: June 8, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the Vice President, Sharon Musch, at 1:07 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the May 11th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email. A motion to accept the minutes as submitted was made by Wanda Pierce and seconded by Dee Dean. The minutes were accepted as read.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle read the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on May 11th was $744.08. Receipts during the month totaled $1,099, which includes deposits made by members for the February 2011 quilt retreat. Expenses for the month totaled $20, which was for payment of Guild dues for two new members. The ending balance on June 8th is $1,823.08.

Membership Committee – We currently have 81 members.

Program Committee – Members were reminded of the October class – Fantastic Fans. There is a correction to the information shared in last week’s email regarding the Nancy Chong class in November. The Guild is offering only one class – Celtic Knot. They will not be offering the Hawaiian Appliqué class. Look for future announcements on how to enroll for these classes.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011) Many members have already picked up their Donation quilt tickets from Janice Tingle. She will hold the tickets that are still remaining and will begin to bring them back to meetings for you to pick up in September. She will not be distributing them over the summer because, since the Guild isn’t meeting, there isn’t any place to deposit your tickets once you have them.

Boutique – Please continue thinking of unique items that can be made and sold at the boutique to earn money for our chapter.

Old Business:

1.      Quilt Retreat – February 15-17, 2011 – Eleven members are currently registered to attend the retreat. Jo is moving forward with the contract and deposit for the Life Enrichment Center. This is a really fun event. Please see Jo if you have questions or are interested in signing up!

2.      Members were reminded to continue to save their scraps of fabric as they sew. Any size is acceptable. The scraps will be used with the boutique projects we’ll be creating later in the year.

3.      Paula had previously mentioned the Nancy Chong classes being hosted by the Quilting Sisters Guild in Leesburg in November. Unfortunately for us, the Hawaiian Appliqué class is filled with QS members, and there is no room for people outside the guild to register. There may be some openings in the Celtic Knot class, but we won’t know for sure until June 10. An email will be sent with registration information if there is room. Members need to sign up ASAP after receiving the email because spots will most likely disappear quickly!

4.      The Shop Hop Passport that was donated by Wanda Pierce will be raffled off at the June 22nd meeting. We will continue to sell tickets for the raffle right up until the time of the drawing. You do not need to be present to win. Please see Sharon Musch if you’re interested in buying tickets.

New Business:

1.      Marilyn mentioned that she has had some trouble getting all our photos and things on the Villages Guild’s website due to her recent travels and the constraints placed on us by the Guild’s webmaster. We are only permitted to submit things for the website once a month. Her plan is to get April, May, and June show-and-tell pictures on the website later this week. In the meantime, members can find their photos on Marilyn’s website (www.myvillageclub.com and select Allamanda Quilt Chapter).

2.      The email addresses of 3 members continue to be “undeliverable.” No-one at the meeting recognized the names of these members. They will be contacted by phone to try to get a current email address. In the meantime, their email addresses are being deleted from the roster.

3.      August 24th is a voting day, and the room we use for meetings will be in use as a precinct. There will be no meeting that day. We are currently working on organizing a day trip to visit 1 or 2 quilt shops, have lunch, and enjoy a day with other quilters. More information on this to follow, but block your calendar out for the whole day on the 24th if you think you’ll be interested in this event.

4.      Pat Smith shared with the group that she had gone on a quilting bus trip with a company called Senior Adventures. When she got on the bus, she realized that it was filled with quilters from Recreation Plantation. The ladies were very friendly and quickly included Pat in their group. She asked them to let her know if they planned any trips in the future, and they recently sent her a flyer describing a trip they’ll be taking to Mary Jo’s Cloth Store in North Carolina. Mary Jo’s is a 32,000 square foot fabric and notion retail center that is filled to capacity with wonderful fabrics and notions at bargain prices! Those who have been say it’s a great shop! This will be a 3-day trip (February 23-25, 2011), and the cost is $249 per person with double occupancy and $319 for single occupancy. The flyer for the trip and the registration form are attached to the minutes.

5.      Members who were at the meeting signed get well cards for Carolyn Page and Jeanette Flint. Carolyn had 3 stents put in, and she is doing great! Hopefully, we’ll see her soon at a meeting. Jeanette Flint is the Villages Guild’s president, and she is recovering from a broken leg. Please keep both these ladies in your prayers.

6.      Just a reminder to all members – Remember to show your membership card when shopping at Joanne’s to receive a discount on your purchase! Yea!

7.      Three members brought items for show-and-tell, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the beautiful items and the creativity of our members! Heather Farnell brought in a casserole carryall that was really cute, and it sparked a conversation about how she made it in the classes that Micki MacCumbee holds at Seabreeze Recreation Centers. I checked with Micki, and her Fabric Fun Arts & Crafts classes are held on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 1-4 p.m.  Micki agreed to print up some flyers for her classes and have them available at the welcome table at our meetings.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:20 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Barlow

Date: May 11, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the Secretary, Cathy Barlow, at 1:00 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the April 13th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle read the treasurer’s report. The checking account balance on March 9th was $820.46. Receipts during the month totaled $73. Expenses for the month totaled $149.38, which included $42 for dues to National Quilting Association, $27.92 reimbursement to Jo Loder for club supplies, $64.46 to Heather Farnell for reimbursement of Quilt Retreat expenses, and $15 to Ella Moore as a refund of dues. The ending balance on May 11 is $744.08.

Membership Committee – We had one new member join today, so we currently have 80 members and are at full capacity for our chapter.

Program Committee – There was no committee report at today’s meeting, but please see program and class information and opportunities below in the New Business section.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – (January 28-29, 2011) Donation quilt tickets are available for pick-up from Janice Tingle. Five dollars of your membership dues was for the purchase of these tickets, which is required by the Guild. You may write your own name on the tickets and place them in the container for the quilt you would like to win at the Showcase, or you may offer the opportunity to win the quilt to someone else and get your $5 back.

Boutique – Members should be thinking of unique items that can be made and sold at the boutique. This will be a great opportunity for us to make some things as a group and earn some money for our chapter’s treasury. Later in the fall, we’ll hold some “boutique days” where those who are interested can participate in making items to be sold on behalf of the chapter. We’d love to have some interesting new items that haven’t been sold at the boutique in the past. But… remember to keep these great ideas under your hat! Good ideas to make money spread like wildfire, and we want our chapter to make as much money as we can at the boutique!

Old Business:

1.      The June 1st Guild meeting at Laural Manor (7:00 p.m.) will be a pot luck dinner. There is no formal program, and the time will be used for new members to meet and greet with those who have been members of the Guild for many years. Additional information regarding the pot luck will be available after the Guild’s Board meeting and will be sent in one of the weekly email updates.

2.      Our chapter’s next Retreat will be held February 15-17 at the Life Enrichment Center. Registration forms are available at the welcome table upon entering the room, or you can print one from the earlier emails that were sent out. This is a great opportunity to get some sewing done and get to know your fellow quilters at the same time! The room only comfortably holds a limited number, and I believe 9 people have already registered. Don’t hesitate if you’re interested! At the last retreat, we had a short workshop, gift exchange, door prize drawing, and videos. This one will be even better! Don’t hesitate… it would be a shame to miss out on this fun event!

3.      Please remember to save your scraps of fabric as you sew.  Any size is acceptable. We’ll share project ideas with you later in the fall!

New Business:

    1.  Class Opportunities

a. Micki’s Jump Start quilt class meets again next Tuesday. She sent an email out yesterday with the cutting requirements for this week’s blocks. If you are participating and haven’t received that email, please contact Micki ASAP. Maccumbee313@comcast.net or 350-6853

b. On June 1st, Dale Angione will be teaching a “snippets” class for Guild members at the Methodist church. It is a technique where you cut fabric into small pieces (snippets) and then glue them back together to create a design, such as a flower. The example Dale displayed at the Guild meeting was of a wall hanging with a large vase with flowers made using the snippet method. She recreated the actual flowers in the border of the wall hanging using the snippet technique. If you’re interested in this class, please contact Jo Loder to register. billjoloder@comcast.net

c. Quilting Sisters in Leesburg is hosting Nancy Chong of Pacific Rim Quilting (www.prqc.com) for 2 classes in November. On November 17, Nancy will teach Hawaiian Quilting. The cost is $35, and lunch is included. On November 18, Nancy will give a trunk show and then teach a half-day class on Celtic Knot. The cost is $25, and you would need to bring your own lunch. This class is a great opportunity to learn how to easily make bias binding for all those beautiful appliqué patterns. Registration is currently open for members of the Quilting Sisters guild, but if they don’t fill all the open spaces, they will open it up to our chapter beginning June 11. Open spots will be offered to other Villages chapters by the 15th, so if you’re interested in an opening (should one exist), please contact Paula so that once she knows how many open spots there are, she can contact you and arrange for payment. plmooney@aol.com

          d. Paula is willing to arrange for Joan Shay to teach her butterfly “Petal Play” class next fall or winter to our chapter if there is enough interest. The cost would probably be around $25. Joan presented her petal play quilts using the heat ‘n bond technique at a recent Guild meeting. The results are stunning, and this would be a great opportunity for us. If you haven’t already done so, please contact Paula if you are interested. plmooney@aol.com

2.      Just a reminder to all members – Remember to show your membership card when shopping at Joanne’s to receive a discount on your purchase! Yea!

3.      Seven members brought items for show-and-tell, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the beautiful items and the creativity of our members!

The meeting was adjourned at 2:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Cathy Barlow

Date:  April 13, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:00 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the March 9th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email.

Treasurer’s Report – Janice Tingle read the treasurer’s report.  The checking account balance on March 9th was $633.63.  Receipts during the month totaled $1,688, which included $1,540 for the retreat, $30 from the Guild for a refund of membership dues, $30 for two new members, and $113 from the 50/50 drawings.  Expenses included $1,475.54 to the Life Enrichment Center for the retreat, $20 to QGOTV for dues, and $20 for refunds to two members for overpayment of Guild dues.  The ending balance on April 13 is $820.46.

The accountant for the Guild told them that chapters do not need to track expenditures of the $250 grant money, so Janice will not be maintaining a separate list of expenses against the $250 grant provided by the QGOTV.

Membership Committee – We had one new member join today, so we currently have 79 members.

Program Committee – There was no committee report at today’s meeting, but please see program and class information and opportunities below in the New Business section.

2011 Showcase of Quilts(January 28-29, 2011)  Janice Bartus will be around for one more month before heading north for the summer.  She reiterated the need for Crystal Light-type containers.  Please bring these in and give them to Janice.  Baskets, cellophane to wrap the baskets and ribbon to tie everything together will be needed in the Fall.  More information will be provided as the date gets closer.

Silent Auction – Each chapter will be asked to donate at least 1 item for every 10 members later this Fall.

Challenge Quilt – The date to participate in the Challenge Quilt has been extended.  Janice has guidelines for the challenge quilt for those who still might be interested.  You will be given a piece of fabric that needs to be included in your quilt that fits the theme of “Village Sunset.”  The cost is $5 (which is returned to you when you submit your finished item).  Please contact Janice if you are interested.  jbveggie@comcast.net  or  313-623-5195

Old Business:

  1. The Allamanda Bylaws were discussed.  Two changes were made to the draft version that was sent out previously to all members.  There was a typo regarding the term of officers that was corrected to read that the term will be for “two (2)” years.  The other change was to the number of members that would constitute a quorum for voting purposes.  Since fewer members are available in the summer, it was decided that a safe number would be 20.  Marge Hopkins moved that the number be changed to 20, and the motion was seconded by Barb Dunn.  The motion carried, and the Bylaws have been changed.  If we find ourselves in a situation where we do not have at least 20 members present when something needs to be voted upon, we will conduct the vote through email notification.
  1. Jump Start Quilt – Just a reminder to all those who will be participating in Micki’s sampler workshop.  The classes start next week!  If you plan to participate and have not been communicating with Micki regarding what you need to prepare prior to the class, please contact Micki as soon as you can.   Maccumbee313@comcast.net  or  350-6853

New Business:

  1. Class Opportunities
    1. Several classes were announced at last Tuesday’s Guild meeting.  They will be held at the Methodist church.  In May, Mary Shara will be teaching beginning machine appliqué.  Each Tuesday in June, Beth Bender will be teaching a beginning quilting class similar to the Jump Start quilt that Micki is already teaching for our chapter.  In July, Dale Angione will be teaching a “snippets” class.  Paula explained what snippets are, but I’m not sure I can do it justice here. Paula assured us that if we, as a chapter, are interested in Mary or Dale’s classes, she could arrange for them to come to one of our meetings to teach.
    1. Paula announced that Pat Nagle (Eleanor Burns’ sister) would be presenting a trunk show and introducing the 2 new Quilt In A Day books at the Quilting Sisters Guild meeting on Thursday morning at 9:00.  Any of our members would be able to attend as a guest.
    2.
    1. Quilting Sisters in Leesburg is hosting Linda Cantrell for a class on May 5 entitled Self Portrait.  The cost of the class is $30.  Please contact Paula if you are interested.  plmooney@aol.com  or  750-8301  Linda will present a program at The Villages Guild meeting on May 4, but she will not be holding any classes in The Villages.
    1. Please contact Paula if you are interested.  plmooney@aol.com  or  750-8301
    1. Future opportunities / dates to mark on your calendar:

                                                               i.      Nancy Chong will be teaching a class in The Villages on November 16, 2010 and providing a lecture and trunk show that evening at the Hacienda Center.  This is not the normal Guild meeting day, which is why the location is different.

ii.      George Siciliano and his wife, Virginia, create beautiful foundation-pieced miniature quilts based on a log cabin pattern, and they have several hanging in the museum in Paducah.  George is the scheduled presenter at the October 2011 Guild meeting.  (Yes… I really meant 2011 !!)  If you’d like to see some of his work, here’s the website link.  www.georgesiciliano.com

Date:  March 9, 2010

The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 12:55 p.m.

Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes from the February 9th meeting since they had previously been sent to everyone via email.

Treasurer’s Report – Cathy Barlow read the treasurer’s report that was submitted by Janice Tingle, Treasurer.  The checking account balance on February 9th was $260.  Income during the month included $555 for dues, $250 grant from Quilting Guild of The Villages (QGOTV), and $22 from the 50/50 drawing on March 3, 2010.  Deposits to the checking account totaled $827.  Janice is still holding one $15 check made payable to “Allamanda Quilters.”  Expenses were $8.37 for 50/50 drawing supplies and $445 to QGOTV for their portion of the dues.  Dues have been paid for 77 members.  Total expenses were $453.37.  Checking account balance on March 9th is $633.63.

Janice will maintain a separate list of expenses against the $250 grant provided by the QGOTV.  We need to track the type of education for which these funds are used.

Membership Committee – Pat Smith indicated we currently have 77 members.  Based on a previous vote, we are capping our membership at 80.  If you have any friends who would like to join our group and quilt in the afternoons, please encourage them to call Pat and sign up.  While there will be another new chapter opening at Seabreeze, they will be quilting on Tuesday mornings, similar to most of the other chapters.

Program Committee – Sharon Musch, provided an overview of the information that was previously sent out via email regarding classes being offered through the Guild.  Since residents are not permitted to receive payment for workshops offered at any recreation center, the Guild has arranged for an off-site location to hold workshops and classes.  Students will be charged $15 for classes.  The facility will accommodate 30 people at tables (similar to our set up) or 60 people for a lecture style class.  If you would like to teach a class, you must first present your idea to the Guild’s Program Committee, which meets on the 4th Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Laurel Manor.  If your idea is approved, you will need to provide a materials list, example, and instruction information.  This information will then be shared with all the chapters, and registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis.  Once you hear about a class, either through email or at our meetings, you are encouraged to sign up ASAP if you’re interested due to the limited number of openings for each class.  The contact for registering is Christie Aerni at caerni@yahoo.com or 750-0586 (home number).  If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

2011 Showcase of Quilts – Janice Bartus, our representative, shared some information she has learned in recent meetings.  Note:  The Showcase of Quilts will be held January 28-29, 2011.

Silent Auction – If you plan to donate items to the silent auction, you need to sign up on the sheet that Janice has by April 6th.  Your items would need to be delivered sometime in November, as preparations pick up for the Showcase.  Any items left after the Showcase is over will be donated to Ye Olde Thrift Shop.

Boutique Guidelines – The list of allowable items, as well as those that are not permitted to be in the boutique, is attached to this email.  If you plan to put something in the boutique, please review these guidelines.

Charities – Money from the Showcase is donated to 2 charities selected by the Guild, based on suggestions from each chapter.  Our chapter needs to select a charity so that Janice can submit it at the Guild Board meeting on March 16.

Challenge Quilt – Janice has guidelines for the challenge quilt for those who still might be interested.  You will be given a piece of fabric that needs to be included in your quilt that fits the theme of “Village Sunset.”  The cost is $5 (which is returned to you when you submit your finished item).  The last day to enter the challenge is April 6th.  Please contact Janice if you are interested.  jbveggie@comcast.net  or  313-623-5195

Judging/Checking In & Out – The judging of quilts will take place on January 13 and 14.  Volunteers will be needed to drop quilts off to the judges between 7:00-7:30 a.m. on January 13.  These quilts will need to be picked up later that day between 6:00-7:00 p.m.  Quilts will also need to be dropped off for judging on January 14 from 8:00-9:00 a.m. with a pickup time between 6:00-7:00 p.m.  Our chapter will be assisting the Friendship Star chapter with this job.  Janice will be looking for volunteers to sign up sometime in November so that she can turn the names in by December 1, 2010.

Crystal Light Containers – Janice is still in need of the Crystal Light tubes.  If you have some you can donate, please bring them to a meeting and give them to Janice.

Old Business:

  1. The shared items we use at each meeting (cutting mats, small ironing board, irons, etc.) are to be stored in the large green tub.  Irons need to be unplugged around 2:30 p.m. so that they will be cool enough for storage by the end of the meeting.  Heather Farnell mentioned that she plans to buy a new ironing board and will donate her old one to the group.  Thanks, Heather!

New Business:

  1. Quilt Retreat – Jo Loder indicated that 10 people were signed up for the retreat that is scheduled for April 13-15, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday and running through lunch on Thursday.  She encourages any of you who are still interested to contact her or Heather.  (Jo – billjoloder@comcast.net  or  703-403-9960;  Heather – heatherfarnell@yahoo.com  or  352-561-4425)  It is a great time to work on unfinished objects (UFOs) and play with fabric!  The facility will prepare meals for us, and all we have to do for 2 whole days is have fun!  The cost is $140 for double occupancy, $184 for single, and this includes your meals, a sleeping room and the sewing room!  For those who have paid their deposit of $50, please give your final payment of $90 to Heather Farnell at the next meeting, or mail it to Jo Loder, 406 Aldama Ave., The Villages, FL  32159.  The balance is due March 16 so that we have a final count to give the center.  Hope to see you there!  (Jo and Heather will hold an informational meeting on March 23 for all those who have made final payment.  They’ll have handouts and important information regarding the retreat for all those who are going.
  1. Block of The Month (BOM) – During the meeting, we mentioned that Micki MacCumbee would be working on a BOM project with beginning (and experienced) quilters beginning next week.  However, there has been a slight change in the schedule.  We have several members who are taking the 6-week beginning quilting class at Quilter’s Dream in Leesburg.  The class runs from 10:00-Noon on Tuesdays, so they will be running late to our meetings for the next few weeks.  So that they don’t miss this opportunity, and so they’re not overwhelmed by this instruction in addition to their class, Micki will plan to start the BOM sessions on April 20th (third Tuesday).  In the meantime, Micki has volunteered to work with the students taking the class at Quilter’s Dream if they have questions or need to review anything they’re learning.  When she starts the BOM project in April, it will be a 12-block quilt with horizontal and vertical sashings, 2 borders, and binding, all with useful techniques.  The blocks will be classical blocks, i.e., churn dash, sawtooth star, drunkard’s path, etc.  Once the top is finished, Micki will work with you to join the top with batting and backing and also learn different quilting techniques (stitch-in-the-ditch, echo, etc.).  Sounds like something fun to look forward to each and every month!  If you have questions, please contact Micki at maccumbee313@comcast.net  or  352-350-6853.
  1. Chapter Web Site – Marilyn Paluszak, our “web mistress,” provided an overview of where you can go to look at the photos she’s been taking.  Our chapter has a link on the QGOTV web site, which is www.quiltingguildofthevillages.org .  We are somewhat limited in what goes on this site, and to see the name of people who shared during show-and-tell, you need to actually click on the picture.  Marilyn has offered us another option as well.  If you go to www.myvillageclub.com and click on the Allamanda Quilters link, you will see the names of the people who shared during show-and-tell, as well as the name of their item, right with the picture.  If you would like to see a larger image, just click on the picture.  Marilyn runs this site and has much more flexibility with regard to content and how often it is updated.
  1. Just a reminder to all members – Remember to show your membership card when shopping at Joanne’s to receive a discount on your purchase!  Yea!
  1. Several members brought items for show-and-tell, and we thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the beautiful items and the creativity of our members!

The meeting was adjourned at 1:57 p.m.
