Allamanda
Quilters The
Villages Quilt Guild Meeting Minutes Paula Mooney called the meeting to order. The Treasurer gave
the monthly report. Meeting minutes from the February business meeting
have been emailed to the members and filed. Vice President Sharon M. told the group that there are openings in
the following classes: 5/18 Crazy Quilt Vest 5/19 Bargello Twisted 5/3 and 5/17 Stack and Whack (This is an
Allamanda-only class and is being taught by Dale Angione.) Information about a bus trip to Paducah scheduled for 10/16-22 is
posted on our bulletin board. This trip is not sponsored by The
Villages. All ordered Allamanda quilters shirts are in (Sharon M. has them).
Marlene also has the sewing machine lights that were ordered. She is
still taking orders if anyone else would like to purchase one (light:
$24.17; with extra bracket: $32). Community
Service:
"Quilts for Kids" (See Dee D. for criteria and patterns).
A motion was made and approved to use our Allamanda chapter's
proceeds from the Quilt Show to support our charity quilts. Reminder:
We have limited storage space at Allamanda and we cannot store fabric here. Old
Business: We are responsible for the June Guild meeting. At the
April meeting, we'll take names for 8 helpers to work the desk and man the
50-50. Trash
to Treasure: If anything is left over in the box at the end of the
meeting, it will be trashed. We have no storage room. 2013
Villages Guild Quilt Show: Everyone had the chance to vote on their first three choices on
what we would like to take responsibility for in preparation for the 2013
Villages Guild Quilt Show. Paula described the requirements of each
job so that we had a good idea of what we would be doing. Our decision
was as follows:
1st choice: Judging day
2nd choice: Angels
3rd choice: Tickets Although these are our choices we may not get any of them and could
very well be assigned a different task. We just have to wait and see. The
2012 Allamanda Retreat will be held February 21-23. Monique has the sign-up sheets.
If you are going to sign up, please fill out a form and give Monique a
deposit check for $50. Double rooms will cost $165. If you're interested, Paula Mooney may be having a yard sale on
Monday with lots and lots of sewing "stuff." She'll send out
an email to verify date and time. Show and Tell followed the business part of the meeting and lots of
beautiful quilts were shown. Terry Murphy

January 11th was $3,016.09. Receipts during the month totaled $488.00, and
expenses for the month totaled $1,490.65. The ending balance February 8th is
$2,013.44. Membership

and contact information have been added to the roster, which is updated and
distributed monthly with the minutes from the business meeting. We currently
have 72 members. Program

and you must register with Sharon if you are interested. There is a limit of
20 students. Dale will present a lecture/workshop on May 3rd during our

make this type of quilt. The actual class will be held on May 17th. 2011
Showcase of Quilts –
Paid
attendance at the Showcase was just under 4,000. This doesn’t include
guild members. The donation quilts didn’t bring in as much money as
everyone had hoped, but it was still a nice amount. Boutique
was beautifully done this year. There was plenty of room so that the items
could be displayed so that they would sell. The doll display was an
interesting addition to the Showcase. Jan
brought in some extra programs from the Showcase. If you weren’t able to
attend and would like them, they’re available at the welcome table. The
group congratulated Marge Hopkins on her 2nd place ribbon in the
Collaborative Large Quilt category. She brought her quilt in so that we
could have a closer look during today’s show-and-tell. OLD
BUSINESS 1.
Quilt Retreat – February 15-17, 2011
– Payment has been made for 20 quilters. Unfortunately, one of the
registrants won’t be able to attend, so we have an opening if anyone is
interested. Please see Jo Loder ASAP if you’re interested in taking this
spot. 2.
Community Service – Dee Dean has received some patterns from Quilts for
Kids that we will use when we start this project. Carolyn Page has sent
letters to several manufacturers (batting and fabric) soliciting donations
for this project. Paula suggested that we could use the proceeds from our
sales at the Showcase Boutique to purchase batting and/or fabric, and
another suggestion was made that we could use a 50% coupon from Joanne’s
to purchase a large bolt of batting for less cost. NEW BUSINESS Upcoming Guild programs: March
1
– Garage Sale. Each chapter will have a couple of tables available where
members may bring in sewing related items that they would like to sell. You
are responsible for pricing all your items before bringing them in, as well
as setting them up, selling them, and taking them home if they don’t sell.
Please remember to bring enough money to make change for your sales, as well
as to buy more stuff! If you’re planning to sell anything, you need to
arrive by 6:30 to set up for the meeting that starts at 7:00. April
5
– David Taylor lecture May
3
– Lisa Marie Saunders – She wrote the book Quilting with Aliens,
and she will be giving a lecture. June 7 – Joy Dudis – Joy is a teacher through the Villages LLLC, and
she will be providing a humorous lecture on home decorating as well as
sharing her grandmother’s quilts. Announcements: 1.
BJ Herter brought in sample blocks similar to the ones in the
Baltimore Album quilt that her guild in Pennsylvania is raffling off. A
picture of the quilt is on the bulletin board at the welcome table. Please
see her at a future meeting if you’re interested in tickets. They are $1
each or 6 for $5. 2.
Cathy Barlow mentioned that she was approached about coordinating a
quilting cruise. It would be a Carnival cruise to the eastern Caribbean on
January 28-February 4, 2012. There would be 3 ports of call (Nassau, St.
Thomas, & St. Maarten), along with 3 days at sea to quilt! She’ll send
the flyer to all members to solicit input as to interest. If there is enough
interest, she’ll move forward with the idea. 3.
Carol Fox updated everyone on the recycle fabric bin that she has
been maintaining. She has sorted quite a bit of the material, and she
reminded everyone that they would be welcome to rummage through the bin and
take what they need. 4.
Marilyn Paluszak will be Allamanda’s new representative to the
Guild Board, taking Janice Bartus’ place. Paula thanked Jan for her great
service to our group over the last year. 5.
Allamanda will be responsible for hosting the June Guild meeting. A
sign-up sheet for the various duties will be available when the date gets
closer. Several
beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time.
Check out the pictures when they’re up on our website! We thoroughly
enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members! The meeting was adjourned at
1:45 p.m. Respectfully
submitted, Cathy Barlow
Meeting
was called to order by Paula Mooney; Minutes recorded by Terry Murphy. (Before
the agenda items were dealt with, those members who are working the quilt
show were asked to sign a Recreation Waiver. Paula had waivers for
those who needed them.) Secretary’s
Report: Attendees agreed to
waive reading of the prior meeting minutes. Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer will submit a report for annual review. Janice Tingle will check with Beth Bender and look into the requirements. At the Guild level the bylaws call for a two-year budget. This should be done after the quilt show. Program
Committee: ·
Chapter shirts
with embroidery can be purchased in February. ·
The David Taylor
class is full; the clown picture class in March was canceled due to not
enough interest. ·
Sharon has
ballots for those who haven't voted in the Guild survey. This survey
will give feedback on the time the Guild should meet. Any change won't
happen overnight since it would involve a change in the bylaws. ·
Dale Angione
will give a Stack-N-Whack class; Sharon will pick dates and coordinate with
her. There will be three meetings: an introduction and then two class
meetings, teaching how to cut the fabric, assemble and sew. Sessions
will be $10 each; no charge for the first, introductory presentation.
Classes will be in April or May. Quilt
Show Report: ·
January 13th
volunteers (they know who they are) work from 7:00 a.m. to Noon and 1:00
p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Janice needs a sub for Barbara on the early shift.
Friday (14th) is judging day; Thursday (27th) is set-up
day, 8:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.; and Saturday (29th) all quilts need to
be picked up, 4:30-6:00 p.m.
There are two AQS
certified judges. All winning quilts will be judged by both judges.
If a judge personally knows who made a quilt then that judge will not judge
that quilt. Of the quilts to be judged, one-quarter are in the
category where the top was pieced quilter and then quilted by a long-arm
quilter. Please share your critique with your long-arm quilter so they
can also improve and learn from the judges’ critiques. Make sure to
cover your name on the back of the quilt if it's going to be judged.
All judging is confidential and ribbons aren't put on quilts until all
workers have left the building. The ribbon committee takes care of
putting the ribbons on the quilts. Remember to follow all judging
rules explicitly. There will be a first, second, third and honorable
mention award in each category. ·
Boutique:
Marlene Jensch said that magazines need to be packed 3-6 per
bundle and will all be priced at $3.25 each. Bundle magazines with a
fabric tie with a big bow. For everything you put in the boutique,
remember: 10% goes to the Guild and 7% to county taxes. Marlene has
the price tags that will need to be safety pinned to each item. See
her for more detail. The 25th is the last day to turn boutique items
over to her. If you have any plastic bags, bring them in also. · We have 36 tubes to go into the boutique and they will be sold for $10 each. OLD
BUSINESS
Community
Service/Quilts for Kids: A committee has been established to
look into this and they will report back, with details. Whipperwill
Quilt Shop has offered to machine quilt the quilts if needed, at no charge.
They cannot be hand-quilted and must be 100% cotton and for all ages, not
just infants. We'll decide how much money we can appropriate for this
endeavor after the Quilt Show.
