Chatham Quilters – April 2008

Many, many thanks to Joy Lynch and Kay Hasson for their hard work on the retreat – they did a fantastic job and made it look so easy (we know better).  Previously, it was decided to do the retreat every other year, but thanks to the incredible job that Joy and Kay did, the overwhelming opinion was that we just had to do it again next year!  So mark you calendars for March 17-18-19, 2009 – Maureen Girardin and Alice Besler will be coordinating the retreat.

Thank you to the ladies that coordinated last week’s party.  We all had a great time!  Cecile was very appreciative of the quilt that was presented to her.  (Great job, ladies!)

Congratulations to Alice Besler for winning the March blotto.  Alice has kits ($1) for the April blotto.  If you’ve purchased a kit, please return the completed block to Alice on or before April 22, the day of the drawing.

We’d like to remind you to sign in on Tuesday mornings, along with the names of your guests.  If you are heading north for the summer, please let us know when you plan to return.

Evening Guild Meetings:

* Attendance has been low for the monthly evening guild meetings.  If you have any suggestions that might increase attendance, let Kay know or put them in the suggestion box.

* At the monthly evening guild meetings, a name will be drawn from the general attendance for a prize, and also from the participants in the show & tell.

2009 Quilt Show:

* Recently all guild members were asked to vote for two charities that would receive the money raised from the sale of the charity quilt raffle tickets.  The charities with the most votes are the Wildwood Soup Kitchen and Hospice.

* Joy Lynch discussed whether awards for the quilt show should be homemade ribbons vs. purchased ribbons.  Those in attendance voted unanimously to recommend purchased ribbons.

* If you are interested in participating in the Quilt Show Challenge, see Joy for details.  You may also sign up for the challenge at this time.

* Boutique items – Tax will be charged on all boutique items, but the tax will be added at the time they are purchased.

Kay Hasson announced that a special executive board meeting was held at which time Janett McGinnis turned in her resignation as president of the guild.

We have arranged for Phyllis Bailey from Whippoorwill Station to give us a trunk show at our April 29th morning meeting at Chatham.  Phyllis entertained us at last year’s retreat with some of the quilts she’s made through the years, and also was the instructor for the Landscape Quilt class at our retreat this year.  A motion was made by Joy Lynch to pay Phyllis $40 for her show; seconded by Maureen Girardin; unanimously approved by all in attendance.

Chatham Quilters will sponsor one person per month that is interested in taking the quilting classes offered through the college.  This person should be willing to share what she learns with our chapter.  See Kay if you are interested in this opportunity – if more than one person, one name will be drawn.  Upcoming classes at the college – May 6th, Ellen Lindner “Adventures in Double Reverse Appliqué”, and June 3rd, Sunnie Malesky “Blooms for Beginners and Other Flower Lovers”.

Sunshine Quilts:  Thank you letters were read for the quilts that have been donated to the Wounded Marines and the Guardian Ad Litem programs.  Both of these projects are ongoing, and Diane English (Wounded Marines) and Judi Gilbert (Guardian Ad Litem) will continue to accept quilts at any time for these worthwhile programs.

UFO Challenge Participants:  Congratulations on finishing your first project.  Everyone did an amazing job.  Next on your list – item #4 – should be completed by June 10th.  Good luck!

Reminder:  Pat Knoechel’s Trunk Show (Eleanor Burns’ sister) will be held on Monday, April 14th at the Savannah Center, 1:30 PM.  Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the door.

Secret Sisters:  Bring your items on April 15th “hidden” in a Wal-Mart bag (so your secret sister can’t identify you as you come into the building).  If you aren’t receiving anything from your secret sister, let Maureen know.

* April 14 – Pat Knoechel’s Trunk Show, Savannah Center

* April 15 – Deadline for filing your income taxes
