The meeting was called to order by the President, Paula Mooney, at 1:09 p.m.
Secretary’s Report – We dispensed with the reading of the minutes since they were previously distributed to the members via email. A printed copy of the minutes is available for review at each meeting if anyone is interested.
Treasurer’s Report – The checking account balance on July 12th was $3,060.74. Receipts during the last month totaled $35.00, and expenses for the same period were $67.35. The ending balance on August 9th is $3,028.39.
Membership Committee – No new report. An updated roster will be distributed with the meeting minutes.
Program Committee – Sharon Musch encouraged members to check the Guild website (www.qgotv.org) to check out the latest information regarding upcoming Guild programs and classes. If you are interested in attending any of these classes, please contact Sharon at sharonmusch@comcast.net or see her at a meeting to register.
The program for the September 6 Guild meeting will be Bob Purcell, a Superior Thread guru. Those who have seen his program indicate that it is very interesting and informative, and he usually brings things to give away!
The Texture Magic class on September 7th needs more participants in order to make it cost effective to hold the class. If you didn’t care for the project initially slated for this class, please check the website again. Several project options have been added to the class.
There are a couple of workshops scheduled for early next year that look very interesting. A Quilt As You Go class has been scheduled for March 2012, and an Instant Art Quilt class has been scheduled for April 2012.
The Free Motion Quilting class being coordinated by Carolyn Page only has 5 more openings. The instructor will be Judy Hansen from The Quilt Shop of Deland, and the class will be held on September 28 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the library. The cost is $45. Please email Carolyn (carolynpage45@gmail.com) ASAP, or see her at a future meeting if you’re interested.
Community Service – Quilts For Kids – Carolyn reported that there are about 10 quilts in the process of being finished for the Quilts For Kids project. The goal is to finish the quilts by the end of the month and then take them to Arnold Palmer Hospital in early September.
4H – Janice Tingle reported on the information she gathered from the 4H extension office. She has the names and phone numbers of the two ladies she has contacted, and she indicated the website was very helpful. Janice indicated that the ladies in the extension office were very excited about our interest in forming a group. They will be holding an open enrollment session on September 22 at the Agriculture Education Center where students have the opportunity to view the options open to them and express their interest. In order to move forward with this project, we need someone to volunteer to lead the 4H group. A separate email will be sent to solicit volunteers.
Old Business:
1. Guild By-Laws Revisions – The revised by-laws for the Guild were approved by the membership at the August 2nd meeting. This revision provides more flexibility in scheduling the meeting time to accommodate speakers and other programs.
2. Retreat – There was no new news to report on the retreat. There are 16 members registered. If you are interested in attending the retreat or in getting more information about it, please contact Monique via email (billfoley@bellsouth.net) or at an upcoming meeting. The retreat will be held on February 21-23, 2012 at the Life Enrichment Center in Fruitland Park. A deposit of $50 will hold your spot! This is a great event, and if there is any way you can make it, you should try! There is good food and plenty of time for sewing and getting to know your fellow quilters a bit better!
New Business:
1. Nominating Committee (Allamanda Chapter) – Marilyn Paluszak and Janice Tingle will be working to find members who are willing to volunteer for the roles of President and Treasurer for the 2012-2013 term. They will be sending a separate email to members regarding their effort.
2. Nominating Committee (Guild Level) – Jo Loder and Cathy Barlow volunteered to be Allamanda’s representatives to the Guild’s Nominating Committee. The committee needs to prepare a slate of names to fill the President and Treasurer roles at the Guild level. The goal is to announce the slate of officers in October and have the membership vote at the November meeting. If you are interested in either of these Guild-level roles, please contact Jo (billjoloder@comcast.net) or Cathy (cathybarlow56@yahoo.com).
3. Showcase 2013 – Allamanda’s responsibilities will be for Check-In/Check-Out of quilts. The committee delivered the folder of materials to Paula, who turned it over to Sharon Musch at the meeting. Each chapter is also responsible for creating an “end drape” with their chapter’s name on it. The Showcase committee has given us the background fabric, and we now need to design and create our banner. Many of you are very artistic, so please consider volunteering to lead a group to complete this item. Our deadline is November 2012, so there’s plenty of time! If you are interested in leading a group of members to accomplish this task, please contact Cathy Barlow (EMAIL, ABOVE).
4. Group Activity Ideas – Marilyn presented a couple of group activities she was considering bringing to the Guild’s Board. One was a UFO challenge, where the participant writes down 5 UFOs they have with a detailed description. A number is selected, and you have to complete that UFO and bring it to show-and-tell. There could be quarterly winners. Another idea was a block challenge where members would design and sew a 12x12 block around a Florida or Guild theme. Chapters could select winners that would be shared at the Guild level, where an overall winner would be selected. Marilyn’s purpose in bringing up these ideas was to test them out on the group before taking them any further. Since there wasn’t a great deal of interest among the members, she plans to table the ideas for now.
5. Deland Chamber of Commerce – Paula received an envelope of materials from The Quilt Shop of Deland that contained flyers, coupons, and discounts. She placed the materials on the table for members to look over and take whatever they would like.
6. Allamanda Block of the Month Blotto (A-BOMB) – Terry Murphy will be leading this new activity which will start at our September business meeting. Blotto is short for “block lotto.” Terry will select a block. At the meeting she will have a sample to display, and for $1 members can purchase the pattern. Sometimes the pattern will include certain fabric, but there are times when all you will receive is a pattern with instructions regarding the type or color of fabric to be used. You take the pattern home, make the block, and then bring your finished block back to the business meeting the following month. For each finished block you bring in, your name will be entered in a drawing. One lucky winner gets all the blocks and a great head start on a quilt top! This is a great way to try new techniques, so don’t be afraid to jump in and participate! Terry may hold “technique” workshops the Tuesday after the business meeting for those who are new to quilting or the particular technique being used in the block that month. Look for more information on this at the September meeting!
Several beautiful items were shared with the group during the show-and-tell time. Check out the pictures when they’re up on the website! We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the creativity of our members!
The meeting was adjourned at 2:12 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Cathy Barlow
