OLD BUSINESS:

4H:  Carol Fox explained that she, Sharon Hannahs and Wanda Pierce attended the 4H awards dinner on August 17th.  They enjoyed the buffet that evening. The silent auction netted $800 and the cake sale $600 for a total of $1400 that will apply to 4H scholarship. A large thanks goes to Melinda Harman for a donation of two small quilted items and a lap size quilt. The girls made two recycled denim purses and Carol made a crib quilt and two small purses for the silent auction. Sharon, Wanda and Carol all got some real bargains in what they purchased.
The club, Basics and Beyond Sewing Club, received its official charter and was awarded a GOLD Clover award. When Carol applied for a club award, she was surprised the group was able to have accomplished many of the requirements and that they qualified for the Gold award in their first year. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out.
All of the Volunteers received a Certificate of Appreciation and a Clover pin - Carol will present these to the volunteers when they are in town for our Allamanda meetings.
All of the girls received at least one award. Some of them with an arm full of certificates and trophies for this and their other clubs. Carol didn't get a list of all their achievements.
Since Sharon Musch will not be able to participate this year, Wanda Pierce has agreed to be co-leader and we could use one more person to fill out the form for more extensive background check just to be sure we have at least one volunteer with the full background check at each of the 4H meetings.
We have some new volunteers for this coming year - Suzanne Brown and Marlene Jensch who will teach fabric painting at our October meeting which could be a one time or longer term commitment. This also could be a good opportunity for anyone, in particular, the snow- birds who want to do something for Allamanda Quilters, but are reluctant because they are not here all year. Carol could use extra hands for just one meeting if that is all you can do. Carol will have the sign- up sheets and volunteer forms at each of our Allamanda meetings.
At the August 25th meeting, Mr. Al Lawson from Sharky's  Vac and Sew in Wildwood gave a talk about machine maintenance and showed  the places on our machines where one should apply oil.  He talked about cleaning and correct bobbins and about his association with 4H and encouraged the girls to stay with the program.
Carol recommended that Allamanda invite him as a guest speaker. He also does sewing machine repair in addition to having a line of Brother machines both new and refurbished. He sells and services vacuum cleaners and floor cleaning machines at reasonable prices. He just repaired  Carol's Hoover carpet cleaning machine and it looks like brand new so she bought a hard floor cleaner that works great as well as a tile grout cleaner that did a fantastic job. His shop is located on 301 in Wildwood just north of 466A.
During the meeting he asked if anyone of the girls does not have her own machine. Allie Sullivan was using a 4H machine. Much to the surprise of all, he went out to his car and returned with a brand new Brother Fashion Runway machine which he gave her.
The 2012-13 year began with the a meeting on September 8th,  and one of the new girls was able to join us.  They anticipate 3 or 4 new members.

REMINDER-There will not be a meeting Tuesday, November 6th, 2012.  At present there is no road trip planned however, should one desire to coordinate a shop-hop for the day please see Cathy.

Sister Chapter Event with Sterling Stitchers was held on July 24th and all had a grand time.  There was a Chinese auction, and a class on a Twisted Bargello table runner as well as good food and fun. It was discussed that we should invite our sister chapter to Sharon Hannahs' workshop, however, a coordinator is needed for this.  Anyone interested please see Cathy.

Community Service- Hospice Angel Quilt - Jo Loder explained how Hospice uses their Angel Quilt and how they were in need of a new one. All were in agreement for Allamanda  making this new quilt. This beautiful top is (approximately 57 x 84) is finished and was displayed at today's meeting. Many of our experienced quilters did a wonderful job on constructing the top and backing, and now it needs to be quilted and bound.  The Quilt Top can be seen on our website www.qgotv.org

NEW BUSINESS:

Executive Board Member Meeting- A volunteer is needed to stand in for Marilyn Paluszak, Member at Large, at the next meeting this month at Laurel Manor.  If interested contact Cathy Barlow.

Guild Officers Nominations- Ellen Miller and Marge Hopkins volunteered to represent Allamanda.  Micki MacCumbee volunteered for the VP Position and the Secretary Position is still needed.  Nominations can also be made from the floor.

Allamanda Officer Nominations- Two positions are open, Vice President and Secretary are open this year.  We have one candidate for the VP position.  Cathy needs two members to work with her on the Nominating Committee, which will present a slate of officers at the October meeting, as well as organize the voting at November's meeting.
Current VP Position Open- Sharon is working FT.  She is still a member and will continue working with the donation quilt and be lead person for Allamanda for the Showcase, however her normal VP duties need to be picked up by a volunteer.  These duties consist of:
Allamanda's representative to Guild Program Committee lead by Micki (meets 4th Tuesday of each month).  This includes registering people for Guild Classes, taking money and turning things in to Micki.
Act as aid to President & perform duties when Cathy is absent.
Handles Internal Allamanda classes…takes sign-ups & money; makes arrangements when necessary. Probably not much going on here for the rest of 2012.
If someone is interested in running for this role in 2013-2014, this is a great way to feel the waters.
