Connie explained how her costume was created in the same way women, North and South, sewed simple clothing. Ken spoke of uses for quilts during the war; how soldiers needed them for comfort and warmth, and all too often, as burial shrouds. Ken is a certified quilt appraiser and history educator. What looks like a sampler quilt is a representation of an Underground Railroad quilt said to be made to point out safe houses and as a guide to runaway slaves seeking safety and freedom in the North. Coincidentally, this year, our own Patchwork Garden Chapter is working on Underground Railroad quilts ... see some from the Show-n-Tell, below:
