The first daytime regular meeting of the Quilting Guild of The Villages was held September 2, 2014 at the Savannah Center.
The meeting was called to order by President Beth Bender at 9:30 a.m. Beth announced our Guild membership has reached 960. About half of the Guild members completed the recent survey. The results are being compiled and will be shared soon. The Long Range Planning Communications Committee will not meet this week but will meet Friday, September 26th at Laurel Manor Recreation Center at 9:00 a.m.
The Showcase Committee reported that volunteers are still needed for scribe roles and to do demos during the quilt show. See your Showcase rep if you are interested.
The Executive Board has recommended Pat Joho from the Bradenton Chapter to fill the position of 2nd Vice President. Pat was introduced and a vote of the membership confirmed her as the new 2nd Vice President for the remainder of 2014. Pat will serve as 1st Vice President in 2015.
Suzanne Keubler from the Bs Chapter is the chairperson of the Nominating Committee to select candidates for Secretary and 2nd Vice President positions for 2015. The chapter nominating committee reps will meet with Suzanne following today's Guild meeting.
Stanton-Wiersdale school Principal Chris Sandy thanked Guild members for their generous donations of school supplies for her students and also for the knitted hats provided. Chris explained that many of her students live in poverty and lack the educational preparation for kindergarten but by the 5th grade, are at or above grade level due to dedicated teachers and support of the community. Our donations will provide items the families do not have the means to purchase.
Barb Reynolds described the Angel Snugs program where the group's 178 members knit or crochet hats for school children and children with cancer. The group meets the 1st and 3rd Friday at La Hacienda at 8:30 a.m. (contact Jennifer Smith 250-3431) and the 2nd and 4th Friday at Big Cypress at 9:00 a.m. (contact Barb Reynolds 217-8423.)
Carol Riggs from Allamanda Chapter is sponsoring a fund raiser to benefit Bexley Harrison, a 15-year-old with multiple medical conditions. Carol will host a craft and tag sale September 15th from 12 noon - 3:30 at her home at 3171 Southern Trace. Guild members are invited.
Ruth Mazurski then introduced Dale Angione from the Mulberry Chapter who narrated a trunk show displaying the quilts of Mary Ann Zatlukal, an award winning quilter whose surviving family made the quilts available to our group. Dale told of Mary Ann's history and described the patterns, techniques and embellishments used in her beautiful quilts.
There were five nametag winners and eleven 50/50 winners.
