Quilting Guild of The Villages February 2013 Executive Board Meeting
The Executive Board of the Quilting Guild of The Villages met February 19th at Saddlebrook Recreation Center. The meeting was called to order by President Alice Nicholas at 3:07 p.m.
Opening Comments: President Nicholas reported on a disturbance at the January22 Program Committee meeting. President Nicholas removed from the Program Committee the person who initiated the disturbance and has asked her Chapter President to name a replacement liaison. President Nicholas also notified the Executive Board that as of this morning she reluctantly accepted the resignation of the Vice President and Program Committee Chair. The Executive Board members appreciate all the work Micki MacCumbee has done for the Guild and to grow the Program Committee.
Executive members are to ask for volunteers for the position of Vice President. According to our Bylaws, this individual will be approved by the Executive Board and the Guild membership. This individual would complete the Vice President/Program Chair 2013-2014 term. President Nicholas reminded everyone that we are a volunteer organization and as we gather to share thoughts and ideas we must do so in a positive, respectful and supporting fashion.
The Secretary’s Report was accepted as published.
Lucie Verbois gave the Treasurer’s Report. She asked chapter presidents to send her the names and email addresses of their treasurers in advance of the March 5th Budget meeting. The volunteers to audit the Guild's financial records are: Ruth Chary, Patchwork Gardens, and Cathy Barlow, Allamanda. They will report on their audit at the March 19th Executive Board meeting. President Nicholas asked if the check to the Haven could be presented at the April 9th Guild Meeting and Lucie reported that it would be in the 10,000 range.
A written status report from the outgoing Vice-President, was distributed to all members. It was strongly suggested that members who are attending Pat Knoechel’s April 16th demonstration and trunk show at the Chatham Recreation Center carpool, as there is limited parking.
Marilyn Paluszak, Webmaster, reported that the Web tribute to the Showcase 2013 was 85% complete. She also reported on the Special Committee for Long-Range Planning. The top 5 issues that were identified were Communication, Facility Management, Surveys, New Chapters (and new members with limited quilting experience); and that we are an all Volunteer Organization. President Nicholas reported on a beginner’s class to be held at the Lifelong Learning College and will send out an email when she learns of the details.
Carole Schroeder reported on the Showcase. There were approximately $20,000 in receipts, 3,000 paid admissions and between 700 and 900 guild admissions (many members attended both days)
Ann Moroz reported on Marketplace 2014. It will be held January 24 and 25th, 2014 at the Wildwood Community Center. Directions to the Community center will be published on the website. (www.qgotv.org). There is ample parking at this site.
Under Membership, it was stated that there are 789 paid members in 14 chapters.
President Nicholas reported on the Guild Quilting Cruise. It will likely be held during the second week of March, 2014 with a Royal Caribbean ship. Sewing machines will be supplied as well as kits for the classes. Marie Anderson and Margie Engel have been approached as instructors and are very interested in participating. More information will be supplied as it becomes available.
President Nicholas proposed that members who are 80 or above in age and have been members of the Guild for 10 years or more be given honorary membership with no payment of dues. The board voted yes.
The issue of copyright law was brought up, particularly in regard to in-house classes and informal Chapter demonstrations and projects. The simple answer is that copyright protects original works of authorship – for a quilter this usually translates to designs. What is not copyrightable is an idea or a method. Therein lies the fine line: where it is okay to teach the method, it is not okay to photocopy and sell another person’s original design/pattern. There will be an article about copyright law and current cases on the website next month.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 p.m.
Respectively Submitted
